Features compared
Where does a gripster actually come from? This page compares 472 units from Chinese brands and unbranded sellers with 16 units from European brands. The key is to distinguish between where a brand is based and where the product is made, because the two often differ. The data shows clear differences in price, load capacity rating and features.
The difference at a glance
- Selection: 472 models on the Chinese side, 75% of them unbranded, versus 16 models from European brands.
- Price: Units from China cost a median of €66, units from European brands €96.
- Load capacity: Chinese brands and unbranded units have a median rating of 200 kg, European brands 140 kg.
- Features: Removable batteries, vibration, foam seals, narrow designs and twin packs are found almost exclusively on the Chinese side. European brands more often rely on built-in batteries and USB-C.
- Manufacturing: 95% of all 519 gripsters in the database are made in China, including many units from brands based outside China.
Who is on which side
The Chinese side includes brands such as SEESII, BIHUI, VEVOR, Raizi, Sundpey and JUYLTOOL, plus all units sold without a brand name. These unbranded units make up three quarters of the group. The European side consists of Rubi from Spain, Montolit and Battipav from Italy, Schwerkraft and Werkmax from Germany, Dortech and Tile Rite from the United Kingdom and Staring from the Netherlands. You can find individual country profiles for China, Germany, Italy and Spain.
What the data shows
On price, the groups are far apart. Units from Chinese brands and unbranded units cost between €12 and €472, with a median of €66. European brands start at €34 and go up to €278, with a median of €96. The median premium for a European brand is therefore around €30.
On load capacity, the picture is reversed. The Chinese side has a median rating of 200 kg, with the strongest unit at 500 kg. European brands state a median of 140 kg, with a maximum of 300 kg, rated by Schwerkraft. Per €100, that works out to 337 kg versus 147 kg. These figures are manufacturer's ratings, and suction pads of the same size are rated very differently. A round 8-inch pad has the same area regardless of brand, yet the ratings for it in the database range from 57 to 300 kg. The lower figures from European brands therefore reflect a larger safety margin rather than lower holding force. The guide Assessing load capacity correctly explains how to interpret load capacity ratings.
The features also follow different priorities. On the Chinese side, 42% of electric units have a removable battery and 66% of all units have a digital display. Among European brands, the built-in battery dominates at 54%, only one electric model uses a removable battery, and 44% have a digital display. On the other hand, 23% of electric units from European brands charge via USB-C, compared with 14% on the Chinese side. Vibration functions, foam seals, narrow designs and twin packs do not appear among the European brands. There, round suction pads dominate at 69% and rubber seals at 100%. Three of the 16 models are manual vacuum grippers with a hand pump or lever.
Brand origin is not place of manufacture
The most important finding of this comparison concerns manufacturing. 95% of all 519 vacuum lifters in the database are made in China. On the Chinese side, that applies to practically every unit, 471 of 472. But brands based in other countries have their products made there too: all nine models from the Israeli brand GRABO are listed as made in China, as are three models from US brands and one model from Rubi.
What this means for buyers: a European brand stands for development, specification, quality assurance and a point of contact in Europe, not necessarily for European manufacturing. In the database, three models from Italian brands are explicitly made in Europe. If you are specifically looking for European production, check the stated country of manufacture, not just the brand name. Conversely, many units are sold as identical hardware under different names or with no brand at all, as the guide Spotting identical gripsters shows.
Strengths of the Chinese side
- Huge selection of 472 models in every design
- Low prices: median €66, starting at €12
- High load capacity ratings, with a median of 200 kg and up to 500 kg
- Removable battery on 42% of electric units, digital display on 66%
- Special features such as vibration, foam seals and narrow suction plates
- Twin packs in 11% of offers
If you want a lot of features for little money or need a specific function, this is almost the only place to find it. On this side, the vacuum lifter, often called a gripster in the trade, is a mass-market product priced accordingly.
Strengths of European brands
- Conservative load capacity ratings with a larger safety margin
- USB-C charging on 23% of electric units
- Compact units with a built-in battery
- Classic manual gripsters with a lever or hand pump in the range
- Brands based in Europe, with a point of contact there
Several of the European brands are established manufacturers of tile tools, and their gripsters are part of a wider tool range. The strongest European unit, a battery-powered vacuum gripper from Schwerkraft rated at 300 kg, costs €60. The cheapest, a mini battery-powered vacuum lifter from Rubi rated at 70 kg, costs €34.
Which type for which job?
| Situation | Recommendation |
|---|---|
| Tight budget, occasional use | Chinese brand or unbranded |
| Special feature such as vibration or foam | Chinese brand or unbranded |
| Large formats with two lifters | Twin pack from the Chinese side |
| Point of contact in Europe wanted | European brand |
| Conservative load capacity rating preferred | European brand |
Whatever the origin: check the vacuum indicator before every lift, work only on clean surfaces and carry large panels with two people. For a direct country comparison, see China vs. Germany, and for a comparison by brand name rather than origin, see Branded vs. unbranded.
Conclusion
Vacuum grippers from Chinese brands and unbranded units are €30 cheaper at the median, state higher load capacities and cover every design and special feature. With 16 models, European brands form a small group with conservative load capacity ratings, often with a built-in battery and USB-C. The place of manufacture separates the two sides less than the name suggests: 95% of all vacuum lifters are made in China, including for brands from other countries. When you buy, compare features, load capacity rating and country of manufacture, not just where the brand comes from.
Frequently asked questions
Are gripsters from European brands made in Europe?
Not necessarily. In the database, three models from Italian brands are explicitly made in Europe. Overall, 95% of all vacuum grippers are made in China, including units from brands based in Spain, Israel and the USA.
How much more do European brands cost?
Vacuum grippers from European brands cost a median of €96, units from Chinese brands and unbranded units €66. The cheapest European models start at €34, on the Chinese side at €12.
Why do European brands state lower load capacities?
Holding force depends on pad area and vacuum, not on the brand. European brands state a median of 140 kg, Chinese brands 200 kg, even for suction pads of the same size. The lower ratings usually include a larger safety margin.
Which European brands are included in the comparison?
Rubi from Spain, Montolit and Battipav from Italy, Schwerkraft and Werkmax from Germany, Dortech and Tile Rite from the United Kingdom and Staring from the Netherlands, 16 models in total.
