Vacuum lifters for large-format tiles

Large-format tiles and porcelain stoneware slabs call for vacuum lifters that hold securely and are easy to position. The database lists 151 models for large formats. Prices per unit range from €17 to €500, with €70 being typical. Typical load capacity is 220 kg, with a peak of 500 kg; per €100 you typically get 312 kg. 95% are electric. Among the battery-powered units, 43% have a built-in battery, 41% a removable battery, 18% charge via USB-C and 30% re-pump automatically. At 11%, the vibration function is almost three times as common as across all gripsters (4%). 63% have a digital display, and 58% are oval.

What to look for

• At least two gripsters: Large, thin slabs flex when held at only one point. Two or more gripsters, evenly spaced, are a must. You will find suitable offers under Twin packs and sets.
• Carry with two people: Slabs of 120 x 240 cm and larger should be moved by two people, carried upright and with an eye on the vacuum gauge.
• A frame instead of single units: For very large formats, a carrying system makes sense, see Gripster, panel carrier or carrying strap?.
• Installation practice: Buttering and floating, alignment and vibrating the tiles into place are explained in Laying large-format tiles with vacuum lifters.
