Five gripsters from the German brands Schwerkraft and Werkmax meet four models from Montolit and Battipav from Italy. Both fields are small but differ markedly: on one side purely cordless units with high load capacity, on the other a mix of hand-pump and battery models made in the home country.

Prices

German brands cost a median of €90, Italian brands €138. The averages are €100 versus €152. The range runs from €59 to €179 among German brands and from €52 to €278 among Italian brands. The cheapest unit on either side is the electric Battipav Solleva for €52.

Load capacity and features

German models carry a median of 300 kg, with a range from 120 to 300 kg. Among Italian brands, only the Montolit Geco states a load capacity, 125 kg for €195. Per €100 of purchase price, the figures are 273 kg for Germany and 64 kg for Italy.

All German models are electric, compared with half among Italian brands. A built-in battery is found on 40% of German units and on one of the two Italian electric units, while only the other Italian one, the Montolit GECONE, has a removable battery. Neither side states USB-C. Only German brands offer an automatic re-pump, on 40% of models. The German units show the vacuum via LEDs (60%) or a digital display (40%), while among the Italian listings only the Montolit hand-pump gripster displays it, via a vacuum gauge. All models on both sides have rubber seals. In terms of shape, oval suction pads predominate in Germany (60%) and round ones in Italy (75%).

Manufacturing

The German listings contain no information on the country of manufacture. Three of the four Italian listings state Italy as the country of manufacture.

Verdict

German brands offer more load capacity for less money and battery operation across the board. Italian brands score with manufacturing in the home country and with manual models. If you are looking for a gripster for tiles, you will find suitable units on both sides. More details: Germany and Italy.
